Socrates Art
“At the age of 12 years, I began to show signs of artistry when I occasionally used charcoal to draw some images on the floor, to the amazement of my parents and siblings. I became a full-time talented artist and was nicknamed Socrates by my admirers.”
Born 1965. Working from near the Ivory Coast border, and therefore far from the major cinema centers of Accra and Kumasi, the variety of his styles are as independent as his geographic location. Red, yellow, and blue serve not only as background colors but are used as borders as well. When mixed through overlay, these primary colors create a bright rainbow-ific tie-dye effect. Polychrome in profusion. White, as in hot, accentuates both the explosions and the outlines. Loves claw marks and claws, with thick, viscous, and sometimes shinier-than-the-background blood, dripping even from the title font. Indeed, every poster has a unique font. Painted in both one and two-bag formats. Uses a profile face in his signature. His work from the early 1990s shows up in a variety of geographically disparate locales in Ghana. Stopped making posters in the late 1990s when the market in general for this work collapsed.
